You are Earth

This is just a reminder. You are Earth. Everything you are comes from Earth. You are also what came before Earth, of course, but that thought is too big for most of us to fully “understand” fully, even if we think we understand.

But the idea that everything that created your body came from the ground, this is easier to appreciate, once you see it.

I was driving yesterday, thinking about this, not for the first time. Then because of a talk I’d attended that included this topic, I started to look at how everything in front of me was also Earth. The potholed streets, the dented stop signs, the multiplying buildings and homes, all of it Earth. We take from the Earth and we create, whether it’s from the trees that grow from its soil, the metal we’ve mined, the plastic we’ve concocted, the children that rely on nutrients from the Earth to grow and grow.

If everything is Earth, and you see it, how can you do anything but want to care for it?

So when I was thinking about how they’re fracking in some areas, or mining for salt under Lake Erie, or destroying the Rainforest, I just saw that Earth is hurting Earth.

When we wake up to seeing that there’s really no separation between it all, perhaps we’ll take care of everything better.

And if we sadly never wake up as a civilization to this fact, hopefully what remains will survive the pain we caused it.

I am going to go outside and sit. Earth sitting on Earth. Hope you do the same.
