Star Wars Culture

Art by Monkey, age 7. Color was added.
I celebrate geekiness, and that means Star Wars. I almost feel like it’s a requirement to be a Star Wars fan if you want to call yourself a geek. Everything else is optional.

I said almost.

Anyway, I’m old enough that I’ve seen all the movies in the theaters, when they came out. Supposedly I saw the first one 17 times when I was a toddler, with my maternal grandmother. I forget who told me that, and it sounds like an exaggeration except for being so specific.

Normally in our family we’re super strict about following the ratings of movies and making sure our kids don’t see anything too violent and so on, but for Star Wars we will be making an exception.

It is STAR WARS. You either get it or you don’t. We’re talking about REAL star wars. Things that are canon. Not the cartoon stuff, not the extras, and in my view, not the prequels. I found the prequels entertaining on some level, but they did not and never will win my geek heart.

J.J. Abrams, you’re our only hope.

This is Star Wars Culture, and J.J.’s grabbed the Storyteller’s stick. He’s standing before the bonfire, waving the story stick in the air as he regales us with these new stories. From the story stick, the fire will illuminate his tales for us to watch, rapt with geekish attention.

I haven’t looked forward to a movie as much as the upcoming one in so long, and it’ll be something special to bring the kids to. A memory waiting to be created.

J. Parrish Lewis was born and raised in Maryland. In his youth there, he and his brother had many adventures in the dogwood forests near his home. His nostalgia for these adventures has strongly influenced his characters, their relationships, and their perspective on the world they inhabit. He moved to California’s coast to earn his degree in communications and now lives with his family in the San Joaquin Valley. Lewis is profoundly deaf and uses American Sign Language to communicate. He enjoys hazelnut coffee, captioned movies, and walking his dog.
